Eddie Rabbitt & Juice Newton – “Both To Each Other” – #1 Country Song

Songwriters – Jay Gruska / Paul Gordon

This ‘country’ version of “Friends and Lovers”, renamed “Both To Each Other”, came out at almost the same time as the ‘pop’ version and reached #1 on the charts at the same time that the ‘pop’ version was #2. In many ways, I like this version much more. It is an excellent arrangement by Charlie Callelo, and has more sensitive dynamics.  The song is inherently a tad corny, but so many people connected to it and that is ultimately what is important.  I was thrilled to have a #1 country record, especially since it was all a big surprise: we had no idea it was being recorded until I got a call from the producer, Richard Landis, to come down to the studio and hear Eddie’s and Juice’s version of the song, which I did and instantly dug.  There are some very clever modulations used to make the keys work for each singer and they managed to do it while keeping the musical integrity of the song.
